A New York City Housing Authority resident at the Howard Houses in Brownsville tells News 12 that the effects of long-time leakage issues are causing health concerns.

Minerva Morales has dealt with leakage issues for the last two years, and tells News 12 that mold is growing on her walls and chipped paint is falling from her ceiling.

The 70-year-old says she suffers from asthma, and tells News 12 that the mold and mildew smell from the water is only making it worse.

"I was starting to get sick because I got asthma, but then lately it was affecting my breathing", Morales says.

Morales says she has opened several tickets with the New York City Housing Authority. She says most tickets went left ignored until they sent a representative to take photos of the damage. She says they never followed up.

News 12 reached out to the New York City Housing Authority, and it responded in a statement saying, “NYCHA staff have contacted the resident and visited the unit to assess needed repairs. We are working to trace the source of a leak affecting this unit and once it has been addressed, additional repair work will be completed. Residents in need of assistance are encouraged to call the Customer Contact Center at 718-707-7771 or submit work tickets through the MyNYCHA application.
