A legislation to make the Streptomyces griseus the official state microbe is up for final vote today in the New Jersey legislature.
Eight assembly men and women are co-sponsoring the bill.
Streptomyces griseus was first discovered in New Jersey in the early 1900s.
The microbe helped to create the world's first antibiotic for tuberculosis.
A team of Rutgers scientists helped develop it, called "streptomycin."
New Jersey would become only the second state in the country with an official microbe.
Oregon's state microbe is yeast -- a nod to the state's craft brewing industry.
