BROOKLYN - Despite the heat, GrowNYC and the Barclays Center's sidewalk Greenmarket opened today.

Nearly a dozen vendors were out selling fresh produce, breads and gluten-free desserts on the sidewalk as customers shopped in the hot weather. Vendors and customers at the market said they were drinking a lot of water, and were thankful for the tents.

The Greenmarket idea dates back to 1977, when similar markets could be found at the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush avenues, before Barclays Center existed.

The Greenmarket will be open every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through November.
