CONEY ISLAND - A historic Coney Island bridge was torn down last night.

The pedestrian walkway spanned Surf Avenue near West 8th Street for nearly 50 years, connecting subway commuters to the boardwalk and aquarium.

A spokesperson for the Economic Development Corporation says the walkway was eliminated because of safety issues, and that this action will allow the city to broaden sidewalks, install a crossing light, and create a new entrance to the boardwalk.
