A Long Branch man will spend a year in prison for locking a puppy in a cage and leaving it the Sandy Hook Bay at high tide.
Aaron Davis, 36, will also have to pay $731.46 in restitution and perform 156 hours of community service.
Davis was convicted last year of animal cruelty.
Prosecutors say that he took the animal in July 2018 after a domestic dispute and locked the dog in the cage in an attempt at revenge.
A passerby saw the dog – now named River – and rescued it before it drowned.
