1 dead, 20 firefighters hurt in Flatbush apartment fire

FLATBUSH - (AP) - Officials say one person has died in a fire thatripped through a six-story Flatbush apartment building.

A fire department spokesman says the body of a 64-year-old womanwas found in the rubble after firefighters battled strong winds forseveral hours trying to extinguish the blaze. The victim's name wasnot released.

Officials say 20 firefighters were injured battling yesterday'sblaze. None of the injuries are life-threatening. Fourcivilians suffered minor injuries. Seven people were treated at thescene.

Strong winds complicated firefighters' efforts at the buildingon East 29th Street before the five-alarm fire was brought undercontrol early Sunday.

Over 200 firefighters were called to the scene.

The building has about 70 apartments. The spokesman says ashelter for displaced residents has been set up at a nearby school.
