BROOKLYN - Young Brooklyn residents learned how they can help shape their community during an event hosted by the Police Athletic League on Friday.

More than 100 kids, ages 10 through 16, participating in the Youth Empowerment Service Day. 

During the special interactive workshops, students learned the history of hip-hop, as teachers focused on community engagement through arts and culture. They also learned about the importance of volunteering. 

Event organizers say workshops like these have proven to be successful in the past.
