BROOKLYN - Local soldiers are preparing to deploy overseas nine years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Fifteen men and women from around the city are gearing up for a one-year deployment to support Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and at a base in upstate New York.
The soldiers are reservist judge advocates, working as law professionals by day and army soldiers when duty calls. Of the 15, some are headed for Fort Drum, some are going straight to Afghanistan and the rest, like Capt. Jose Nieves, will spend time at both.
"For reservists in particular, it reminds us why we serve," he said. "And it reminds us why we have to sacrifice greatly for our country."
