NEW YORK - Authorities have announced the largest seizure of illegal guns in New York City history.

According to investigators, a pair of southern gunrunners were among 19 people arrested in a scheme involving discount Chinatown buses.

The alleged smugglers, Walter Walker and Earl Campbell, of North Carolina, would hide firearms in their luggage on the buses and make their sales around the borough.

The arrests were made after a 10-month investigation in which more than 250 guns were sold to undercover officers.

Authorities say Walker used a music studio on Atlantic Avenue as a location for several sales to undercover police officers.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says both North and South Carolina have weak gun laws that allow criminals and traffickers to obtain guns easily. He says that those states do not require the reporting of a lost or stolen firearm.
