BEDFORD-STUYVESANT - The recent shootings of two Brooklyn children, one fatal, has prompted two community advocates to hold a youth summit for change.

Police continue to investigate the March 13 shooting of 13-year-old Marquise Perez at 186 Howard Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant. An arrest was made in the incident. Candles and pictures of the teen mark the spot where he lost his life. The next day, a stray bullet struck a 9-year-old girl inside the Langston Hughes Homes in Brownsville. The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but was later upgraded to fair condition.Advocates argue that the incidents didn't have to happen. "Unfortunately, there are some parents out here who are not involved, and we need them to get involved," says Tony Herbert. "They also need to know there's a support mechanism in place to support them."

Herbert and Tony Forman plan to hold the Central Brooklyn Youth Summit April 19 to discuss issues, such as a lack of recreational centers and activities for children. The men say everyone is invited.
