BROWNSVILLE - An early morning fire at a Brownsville apartment building has sent two children to the hospital.

Firefighters say the blaze started on the second floor of the apartment building at 373 Blake Ave. at around 3 a.m. When crews arrived, they were told by onlookers that children were trapped inside. Firefighters say the smoke was so heavy it made it difficult for them to find the children.

The young boy and girl were eventually found lying on the floor, unconscious from smoke inhalation. They were taken to Brookdale Hospital, where they are in critical but stable condition.

The fire marshal says an investigation into the fire's cause is ongoing.
