NEW YORK - (AP) - Two New Yorkers will spend decades in prison forbeating an Ecuadorean immigrant to death after mistaking him andhis brother for a gay couple.
Keith Phoenix was convicted of murder as a hate crime in theDecember 2008 death of Jose Sucuzhanay. He wassentenced Thursday to 37 years to life in prison.
Hakim Scott was convicted of manslaughter but acquitted of amore serious murder charge. He received 37 years in prison.
The victim and his brother were confronted in late December 2008when they were coming home, arm-in-arm, from a party.
Prosecutors said they were targeted because the defendantsthought they were gay. The attackers also yelled anti-Hispanicslurs.
