BROOKLYN - Officials say two police officers are in critical condition after a fire erupted at an 18-story Coney Island apartment building Sunday afternoon.

Fire officials responded to 2007 Surf Ave. at around 12:30 p.m. to reports of a fire on the 13th floor. It took responders nearly an hour to get the flames under control.

Authorities say the police officers, a 38-year-old male and a 36-year-old female, were transported to local hospitals after exiting an elevator on a smoke-filled floor. They were found unconscious in a hallway.

The two, identified as officers Rosa Rodriguez and Dennis Guerra, are being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning.

Officials say 12 other people suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
