CONEY ISLAND - Some 20,000 runners took part in the 33rd annual Brooklyn Half Marathon this morning, New York City's first major race since last month's deadly bombing at the Boston Marathon.

In the wake of the Boston Marathon attack, the security presence was increased. Only clear bags were allowed near the race and all garbage was passed off to volunteers, as every garbage can along the route was removed.

The race began in Crown Heights and finished along the boardwalk in Coney Island. Money raised during the half-marathon will go toward helping Sandy victims in the borough recover.
