BROOKLYN - The 31st annual Midwood Mardi Gras Street Fair was held today along Avenue M from Ocean Avenue to East 13th Street.
Vendors offered an eclectic assortment of goods, ranging from books to hats and everything in between. Local business owners along Avenue M also benefit from the exponentially increased traffic on the street.
The event was organized by the Midwood development corporation as a way to raise funds. The group helps the community with housing, after-school programs and foreclosure counseling, and it also helps seniors apply for health benefits.
Some say the “Mardi Gras” name comes from a restaurant no longer on Avenue M. Others claim it is simply a catchy phrase. Either way, residents say it is a good time for a party and street fair.
