5 Brooklyn-based officers charged in gun-smuggling ring

BROOKLYN - Authorities say 12 people have been charged in an alleged gun-smuggling ring, including five active-duty police officers based in Brooklyn precincts. The suspects are accused of smuggling firearms and slot machines that they believed to be stolen. They also allegedly swiped hundreds of boxes of cigarettes while under FBI surveillance. The suspects were arrested after a sting with the help of an undercover FBI informant, officials say. Three retired NYPD officers and a New Jersey corrections officer are among the other defendants, according to court documents.Mayor Michael Bloomberg said if the accusations are true, they stand as a "a disgraceful and deplorable betrayal of the public trust."

AP wire services contributed to this report.
