NEW YORK - (AP) - Five Brooklyn high school students have beencharged with attacking another student with a padlock inside asock.
The 17-year-old victim, Shacara McLaurin, told the Daily Newsthat she wasn't able to open her jaw after the April 1 attack.
She told the paper that one of the girls wanted to hurt herbecause she sang better than her. They were competing in a talentshow at the Brooklyn Academy and Bedford-Stuyvesant PreparatorySchool. The show, planned for Friday, was canceled.
The News says the five students have been charged with assault,menacing, weapons possession and harassment. They were releasedwithout bail.
A Department of Education spokeswoman said the principal wasunaware of the attack until hearing from McLaurin's mother. Shesaid the DOE was looking into the incident.
