BROOKLYN - A late-night fire destroyed a Bedford-Stuyvesant home Saturday and injured five firefighters.
The blaze gutted the home at 879 Lafayette Ave.
The fire broke out at around 10 p.m. at the back of the property and quickly spread up the house, through the rafters in the roof and to two next-door buildings.
Firefighters were able to get the flames under control by midnight.
The Red Cross is providing temporary housing and emergency funds to the families displaced by the fire.
One of the injured firefighters was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Another firefighter sustained minor injuries and two others sustained minor burns. They are all expected to be OK.
One of the women who lived there was visiting her son on Long Island.
"People see it as a tragedy," says Bernard Scott, the son. "I don't. I see it as a blessing...I have her. She has her health and strength. Everything else is tangible and can be replaced."
