EAST NEW YORK - Five people were injured late last night in a fiery crash involving an unmarked police car and a church van.

The accident happened at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Essex Street in East New York. Matthew White, one of three off-duty auxiliary police officers inside the church van, says they were just leaving the intersection when the police car crashed into the van. White says the police car had no lights or siren on.

Witnesses and other people nearby helped White and others to safety. The van landed on a neighbor's parked car and immediately burst into flames. All three vehicles were destroyed.

White says two other people in the van were injured, including a woman in critical condition. Two police officers were taken to Jamaica Hospital with minor injuries.
