5-year-old girl released to stranger from P.S. 329 in Coney Island
BROOKLYN - It was a terrifying first day of school for one Coney Island family who says their daughter was released to a complete stranger.
According to Janet Torres, her 5-year-old Victoria was allowed to leave P.S. 329 at the end of the school day on Sept. 9 with someone who the principal said was a friend of her mother.
Officials eventually found the unknown woman with Victoria, but Torres says she doesn't know her, and that she was not authorized to pick her daughter up from school.
A spokesperson for the Department of Education said in a statement, "The child was waiting for her parent with another classmate and the classmate's mother at a different school exit. When the principal learned about this, she reminded the parent and staff about the protocol during dismissal. The principal properly reported the incident. The school will make sure this does not happen again."
