GERRITSEN BEACH - Hundreds of volunteers were in Gerritsen Beach today, helping restore the community that was badly damaged during Superstorm Sandy.

About 500 volunteers from different organizations and companies across the city worked on nearly a dozen projects. Volunteers helped rebuild seven homes and a few community spaces.

Brooklyn-based nonprofit Rebuilding Together organized the event with the help of Lowe's and Meredith Corporation, among others. The nonprofit has already rebuilt 100 homes since the storm struck. It plans on restoring at least 200 homes by next year.
