6 Brooklyn schools taken off chopping block

Hundreds of students and teachers are staying where they are after Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced he's going to save more than half a dozen

BROOKLYN - Hundreds of students and teachers are staying where they are after Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced he's going to save more than half a dozen schools slated for closing.

According to the Department of Education (DOE), seven city schools, including six in Brooklyn, received A or B grades on their progress reports after being placed on a list of 33 failing schools set to be shut down or phased out.

The schools getting a second chance are Maxwell High School, Cobble Hill School for American Studies, Brooklyn School for Global Studies, Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, I.S. 136 Charles O. Dewey, William E. Grady Career and Technical Education High School and W.H. Maxwell Career and Technical High School.

The William E. Grady school has made drastic improvements, going from a D grade to a B. Teachers have attributed some of the success to the new principal, saying that she came in last September and let students know that faculty cares about them, working with each student to bring out the best in them.

Back in June 2010, the school was put in a transformation model because of low graduation rates. With that, the old principal had to be removed. Since then, the school has received additional funding for enrichment trips and after-school programs.
