BROOKLYN - The city welcomed 85 new emergency medical technicians into its ranks today during a graduation ceremony.

Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano thanked the new graduates for joining what he called the backbone of the New York City Fire Department at the Randall's Island ceremony.

Officials say numerous languages are spoken among the diverse group of graduates, including Korean, Russian and Spanish.
