BROOKLYN - Above ground subway service resumed Tuesday, well ahead of the Wednesday morning commute but a day after the governor announced its suspension in anticipation of a nor'easter.

Like above ground platforms throughout the city, the No. 3 train station on Rockaway Avenue had been closed from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. After that, straphangers returned to business as usual -- well ahead of the Wednesday morning commute.

"This situation now is under control, and we are certain that we'll be in a position to open schools effectively tomorrow," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

The B and Q platform on Brighton Beach Avenue remained largely empty Tuesday evening despite reopening.

Caution tape installed early in the morning to keep commuters away from closed platforms remained up in some places, possibly adding to the confusion.

Some residents there said they did not know that service had resumed. Others said they were done traveling for the day.

"I heard it's running, but now it's too late to go anywhere, you know," said Brighton Beach resident Theresa Faust.

Ice may still cover many roads and sidewalks throughout the city as temperatures remain below freezing.
