RED HOOK - The box may say made in China, but many action figures are first handcrafted at a Red Hook studio.

Dave Cortez and three other workers create popular action figures, like Scarface and Godzilla, out of clay at Inu Art. Craftsmen take up to three weeks to complete a figure before sending it to China to be mass produced. Cortez says there are many steps in the process, like cutting joints so characters can move. Craftsmen also make sure details, such as wrinkles in clothing and accessories, are realistic.

Inu Art has made about 300 figures, which line the walls. Cortez says after seven years in the business, he still gets a thrill out of seeing his products on store shelves. Cortez says he would like to bring Brooklyn children to the studio to get them interested in the arts.
