BROOKLYN - The man convicted of killing a Brownsville mother of 12 has been sentenced to 55 years to life in prison.

According to prosecutors, Andrew Lopez fatally shot 34-year-old Zurana Horton in 2011 in a gang-related shooting outside a school. They say Horton was caught in the crossfire while trying to shield children.

Lopez spoke to Horton's family prior to the sentencing, telling them that he is sorry for their loss, but that her real killer remains on the loose.

The 20-year-old had been found guilty of second-degree murder, as well as two counts of assault in connection with two people wounded during the crime, including an 11-year-old girl.

Lopez's older brother, Jonathan Carrasquillo, was also accused in the shooting, but was acquitted of all charges.
