FORT GREENE - Police have arrested the driver of an SUV who they say jumped a curb in Fort Greene yesterday and hit four people, killing a child.

The accident happened at the intersection of DeKalb and Claremont avenues just before 1 p.m. Police say 59-year-old Anthony Byrd was behind the wheel of a red SUV when he lost control while trying to avoid hitting two people in a crosswalk. He then allegedly hit a parked car and jumped the curb, driving down the sidewalk where he hit four people.

Lucian Merryweather, 9, was pinned against a brick wall by the car and was killed. The boy's mother, another adult and a 5-year-old child were taken to Kings County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Byrd now faces nine charges, including criminally negligent homicide and reckless driving.
