AP: Gov. Paterson won't seek new term

ALBANY - (AP) - David Paterson is out of the governor'srace.

That's the word today from Democratic officials in Washington, who tell The Associated Press that they got the word early today.

But there's been no official word yet from Governor Paterson, who finds himself embroiled in yet another controversy, this timeover his handling of an aide's domestic abuse case.

Paterson had just recently made the official announcement thathe was running to keep a job he stepped into when then-GovernorEliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution schedule.

But fellow Democrats started calling for him to drop his plansafter reports surfaced that one of his top aides is ensnared in adomestic-violence scandal.

Paterson's decision paves the way for New York Attorney GeneralAndrew Cuomo to make an unimpeded run for the Democratic nominationfor governor.
