NEW YORK - (AP) - The firing of about 4,100 New York City teachershas been averted under a budget agreement that's been reached bycity lawmakers and union officials, although thousands moreteachers expected to quit or retire this year won't be replaced.

United Federation of Teachers spokesman Dick Riley said a dealwas reached Friday night that would save the teachers' jobs throughunion concessions on sabatticals and the hiring of substitutes.

A city official familiar with the negotiations, who requestedanonymity because no formal announcement had been made, isconfirming the details of the deal. The official says that the dealwill also prevent the shuttering of 20 city fire companies.

Officials have estimated that 2,000 teaching jobs will still belost through attrition, leaving 73,000 to teach more than 1 millionstudents.
