BROOKLYN - A new, automated water meter installed in homes can monitor consumption and leaks saving money and conserving water.

The meters take readings four times a day giving homeowners an accurate picture of how much water they?re using. It also shows large increases of use like those stemming from a leak.

The water meters have already been installed in more than 80,000 Brooklyn homes.

The Department of Environmental Protection says they plan to have everyone in the city using the new meters by 2012.
