(07/14/10) BROOKLYN HEIGHTS - After nearly two decades of being in business, the Baltic Bazaar Thrift Shop has become another casualty of the economy.
The shop is owned and operated by Baltic Street Advocacy, Employment and Housing, and the organization says it can?t keep up with the rent.
Sara Goodman, of Baltic Street AEH, said that if the thrift store stayed open past this month it would cost $5,800 per month, a price the agency simply can?t afford. Behind the thrift store is a space the organization uses to hold retail training for the mentally disabled, computer classes and support groups. Goodman said those services are being moved to a bigger space in Sunset Park.
The Baltic Bazaar Thrift Shop will close its doors for the final time this Saturday after 18 years in business. The Baltic Street AEH hopes to have classes running in the new space come August.
