Bank of America unveils new debit card fee

BROOKLYN - Bank of America announced this week that starting next year, customers will be charged $5 a month if they make purchases using their debit card, a change of policy that has drawn fire from Brooklyn residents. "I'm appalled, actually," says Bank of America customer Danielle Tillman. "I may look into switching to another bank."The fee comes as new regulations cap the amount of money banks can collect from merchants who accept debit card swipes. Other banks say they are also testing out a $3 monthly debit card fee in select areas of the U.S. Meanwhile, Bank of America says there will be no charge for using a debit card at the ATM or to make mortgage payments. Also, customers who have at least $20,000 on their checking or saving account will not be charged a fee to make purchases.
