BROOKLYN - The Battle of Brooklyn was a major event in the Revolutionary War, and organizers have opened a new Park Slope exhibit dedicated to the historic event.

One landmark from the battle is the Old Stone House, in the middle of the neighborhood. But over time the site has also been a farm and a baseball park.

Organizers say the exhibit will teach visitors about everything from the weight of a cannon ball to the words in the Declaration of Independence. It also has information about historical residents in the area, like the Vecht, the Bergen and the Cortelyou families.

But it also contains lesser known facts.

For example, historians say that Brooklyn was the largest slave-holding community in the northern colonies during the Revolutionary War. One out of every three Brooklyn residents were enslaved at the time.
