BEDFORD-STUYVESANT - A Brooklyn family is mourning today after a fire destroyed their home and killed a 4-month-old baby girl.

Fire officials say the fire at 521 Green Ave. started yesterday at around 1:30 p.m. and quickly spread throughout the building. They say the fire was started by a boy who was playing with a lighter and a toy skateboard, which caught on fire.

Fire crews say that when they arrived, they were made aware that the baby was still inside the home. Firefighters were able to pull the 4-month-old from the burning building.

However, the baby's godmother later confirmed that she had died from her injuries at Cornell Medical Center.

Fire officials say the tragedy is a reminder to all parents to talk to their children about fire safety.

The FDNY says it offers online games to help parents teach their children how to avoid dangerous situations at home, such as playing with stoves or ovens, and playing with matches.
