BROOKLYN - The number of people staying at the city's shelters hit a record high of almost 60,000 last week, but some Brooklyn residents oppose a new short-term facility in Bed-Stuy.

They attended a town hall meeting on the issue Monday evening.

Opponents of the shelter say their community is shouldering too much of the burden. They want shelters spread out across more neighborhoods.

There is already a men's shelter down the block from the proposed new facility, and 14 within the local Community Board's footprint.

The city says the plans are not yet set in stone and the community meeting was designed to get neighborhood feedback.
