BROOKLYN - Thousands of Brooklyn residents are taking part in this year's Bike to Work Challenge, part of a weeklong competition that promotes a healthy lifestyle and alternative transportation.

Almost 600 teams from numerous companies have signed up to get to work in a healthy way. Transportation Alternatives, which is hosting the event, says the competition is all about recognizing that there's plenty of ways to travel to work.

Samathan Dodds, a member of Transportation Alternatives, says over the years biking has become a more viable means of transportation as bike lanes become more common.

One resident taking part in the competition says it is empowering to see men and women cycling to their destinations.

Organizers say the winning team will win prizes and bragging rights. The citywide competition ends this Friday.
