BROOKLYN - The Brooklyn Bridge will be closed during nighttime hours for Manhattan-bound traffic for rehabilitation work.

The city announced that beginning Monday, the bridge will be closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Friday, until 2014. Also, the Manhattan-bound lanes will be closed for at least 24 weekends.

Traffic will be rerouted to the Manhattan Bridge or other crossings. The Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge will remain open.

The $500 million construction project comes after the state gave the 127-year-old bridge a poor safety rating in 2007.

"It's inconvenient that it is going to be closed, but I'd rather deal with the inconvenience now if it is going to be safer," says motorist Dennis Hurley.
