BK church refuses donation from pro-gay marriage politician

WILLIAMSBURG - Upon request from Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, Our Lady of Mount Carmel church has returned a $50 donation from Assemblyman Joe Lentol (D-Brooklyn) due to his support for same-sex marriage.

Monsignor Joseph Calise says he returned the check, meant to be a prize for two students graduating from the church's school, out of obligation to the bishop.

DiMarzio has asked all schools in the diocese to refuse any donations or honors given to them by state legislators who voted in favor of same-sex marriage.

Calise says he believes Lentol should respect his constituents' beliefs, and hopes the assemblyman doesn't misconstrue the move as being homophobic.

Lentol says he was surprised by the church's decision, as he has been sending the school donations for the past 20 years. The students still received their awards, with the money coming from the parish.
