BK kids pedal to class for Bike to School event

BROOKLYN - Brooklyn students switched from buses to their own "green" two-wheel rides today for the first ever Bike to School event.

Some 80 students from M.S. 51 gathered at several meet-up points in Park Slope this morning and pedaled to class.

"Instead of using so many cars we could use a vehicle that's fast, but that doesn't hurt the environment," says seventh-grader Isabelle Mindel.

The event was organized by the Department of Transportation, Bike New York and Bicycle for a Day, a group founded by actor Matthew Modine.

Organizers of Bike to School are hoping the success of today's event will inspire other students to hop on their bikes.
