BROOKLYN - A group of Marine Park residents signed a petition asking a nearby church to lower the volume of its pre-recorded bell ringing.

John Russo says he has been complaining about the loud sound of the bells for the past two years, but the management of St. Thomas Aquinas Church has ignored his requests to tone it down.

According to Russo, in 2007 the Environmental Control Board found the sound of the bell tolling to be louder than acceptable in residential areas. However, the Deparmtent of Environmental Protection says churches are exempt from noise ordinances.

Russo says he and his neighbors will not give up their fight.
