BK mother arrested after newborn found in shoebox

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT - Police arrested a Bedford-Stuyvesant mother after they found her 4-day-old daughter in a shoebox.

Police found the infant in the shoebox Thursday at the Vernon Houses on Marcus Garvey Boulevard. They say they discovered drugs and illegal weapons in the 19-year-old woman?s apartment. A 22-year-old man was also arrested inside the apartment and was charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

The newborn was treated at the hospital. Authorities say the city?s child welfare agency now has custody of the baby.
