CONEY ISLAND - More than a million New York City public school students are heading back to school this morning. However, some schools are starting the new year with lawsuits linked to overcrowding. Toward the end of last school year, parents at I.S. 303 in Coney Island protested to keep Coney Island Prep students out of the building. The prep school is housed in a nearby community center, but education officials say they needed more space. I.S. 303 already contains three schools, and parents say they are concerned for their children's safety and ability to maintain high grades. The merger has since been approved, but could be reversed at some point during the year.Panel approves merger of 2 Coney Island schoolsBK residents attend hearing on charter, public school merger
