BK residents hit hardware stores for shovels, salt

BROOKLYN - As a major winter storm slams the borough, Brooklyn residents were hitting hardware stores for shovels, ice-melting salt and snow scrapers.

Some residents said they were out of luck at big-box stores such as Lowe?s and Home Depot, where snow gear had already sold out. So many said they visited smaller, local hardware shops instead.

Alan Butrico, owner of Brooklyn's Best Locksmith and Hardware in Flatlands, said every flake that falls is another dollar for him.

Butrico said he plans on staying open all day until the rush is over.
