FLATLANDS - Brooklyn residents are rushing to hardware stores across the borough in anticipation of Hurricane Irene.

The hurricane is expected to slam the area this weekend and many residents say they would rather be safe than sorry when it comes to being prepared.

Hardware store owners say the hottest items flying off the shelves are flashlights, lanterns and generators.

Store owner Alan Butrico says the line was out the door earlier this afternoon, and his sense is that Brooklyn residents are really panicked about this pending storm.
