BROOKLYN - The founder and principal of a Brooklyn charter school was honored recently with the Brooklyn Anti-Violence Coalition's Woman of Courage award for her unique approach to education.
Andrea Zayas founded the La Cima charter school in Bed-Stuy, where students are called 'scholars.' The school centers on preparing children for a healthy and successful future, so they can make a difference in their community.
Music, soccer and Spanish courses are required for the scholars, and at lunch time, only healthy meals are served.
"What we see is they want to be here," Zayas says. "They don't want to go home over the holiday breaks or the end of Friday."
