Blood shortage hits New York City

The recent snowstorms have canceled blood drives citywide. (2/6/14)

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN - The New York Blood Center says the recent snowstorms have sparked a blood shortage citywide.

Because of the snowstorms, more than 100 blood drives throughout the city have been canceled. At the New York Blood Center on Lawrence Street in Downtown Brooklyn, donors have been showing up all day to help with the desperate need. Mayor Bill de Blasio says he's also going to step up and donate.

The blood shortage means there's just a few days' worth of blood to supply hospitals.

The center says New York City always operates at a low blood supply, so it always welcomes donations.
