BROOKLYN - Coney Island Hospital is being scrutinized for a fatal error during a patient's blood transfusion.

A hospital spokesperson confirms that an 84-year-old woman died after receiving a transfusion of the wrong blood type last Tuesday. The state Health Department has ordered the hospital to send the patient's blood elsewhere for testing.

"Our deepest condolences go out the family," read a statement issued by the hospital. "Coney Island Hospital can still provide blood to patients who need it quickly in an emergency."

Those patients will be given type -O blood because it can be used universally.

Coney Island Hospital is working with the state to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
