Bloomberg to reiterate plan to cut 6,100 teachers

NEW YORK - (AP) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg'sadministration is warning his preliminary budget will containdifficult news following federal and state budget cuts.

Under the preliminary plan, the mayorcalls for cutting more than 6,000 public school teaching jobsthrough layoffs and attrition.

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew callsthe proposal "bizarre" given previous reductions of the teachingworkforce, increasing class sizes, and growing city revenue.

New York City is the largest school district in the country with1.1 million students.
