BROOKLYN - Mayor Michael Bloomberg and School Chancellor Dennis Walcott have launched a new software development contest to benefit students citywide.

The Gap App Challenge invites developers to submit design applications for programs aimed at helping middle schoolers excel in math.

Officials say that kids failing in math usually struggle with other subjects in high school and college.
