Borough kicks off Brooklyn Bridge's birthday bash

BROOKLYN - The borough kicked off a weeklong celebration of the Brooklyn Bridge's 125th birthday Thursday night.

Hundreds attended the celebration, including Borough President Marty Markowitz and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The Brooklyn Philharmonic and composer Marvin Hamlisch performed as well.

The festivities featured a fireworks display that lit up the sky over the East River and the crowd sang ?Happy Birthday.? There was also a birthday cake that was a replica of the bridge.

Thursday night?s festivities were the beginning of a five-day celebration that will last through Memorial Day weekend.
